[ cheers and applause ] ?? >> jimmy: welcome! welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome. welcome. thank you so much. it is -- [ laughter ]
it is great to have you here. let's talk about -- [ laughter and applause ] let's talk about everything. thank you so much for being here. >> you are so welcome. i am not contagious. >> jimmy: you are not -- no. >> just for your information. >> jimmy: you're feeling much better. is that correct? >> oh, yeah. absolutely. nothing like a little rest when -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> your doctor tells you to, and you don't do it. >> jimmy: how is that for you? because that would have driven me crazy. [ sighs ] >> it was crazy for me because, you know, i'm used to just kind of getting up and powering through it. and, that's what i tht it turned out i couldn't. >> jimmy: yeah. >> so, i took a few days off, and actually, i think it was good. i got a chance to sort of reflect on this crazy campaign that we're involved in -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> and decided that, you know, i'm gonna talk about what i think needs to happen to help people, and try to stay away from a lot of the negative insult stuff that goes back and forth. [ cheers and applause ] and, i -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> and, i feel really good
election. >> jimmy: oh, yeah. >> just in case you were wondering. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: thank you, yeah. no, i know. i know. i know, yeah. >> yeah. >> jimmy: do you -- did you hydrate, did you do soups and -- >> oh, hydrate, soups, yeah. >> jimmy: did you do -- do you have any, like, clinton -- how is -- is bill a good nurse? [ laughter ] >> you know, he's very solicitous. yeah, he -- >> jimmy: yeah, he -- >> yeah, he was really -- he was really, very sweet, actually. >> jimmy: uh -- >> my dogs were great, too. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: uh, we just had, uh -- we just had donald trump on the show a few days ago >> oh, i heard that. >> jimmy: yeah. [ laughter ] but i head that he left something in your dressing room, and i apologize because i didn't know that -- >> oh. >> jimmy: he left something behind, and that's -- >> yeah, yeah. >> jimmy: we usually don't -- he left that here in, and this is just -- i know you -- >> let's look. >> jimmy: i mean -- >> i mean, let's see what's in there. >> jimmy: well, this is a a framed photo. this must be of his wife or something. no, is that -- no, that's not melania. is that? [ laughter ] >> awe, that's his -- yeah. [ applause ]
are you sure? that shouldn't -- i don't know if this is -- >> yeah, the most famous bromance doing, right? [ laughter ] >> jimmy: besides me and timberlake. but, yeah, uh, the -- [ cheers and applause ] >> but, justin's worthy of your attention. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: thank you. i appreciate that. he has a -- >> the last i checked, he hadn't -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> you know, killed off his adversaries. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: no, i don't think he has, either. [ laughter ] a cd. why would have a cd in there? we don't even have a cd player in the back there. oh, i see. this is pink floyd, "the wall." [ laughter ] so, i understand what he's talking about. >> yeah. >> jimmy: that's why he must be really into that. >> that's as close as he's gonna get to the wall. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: we got to return that, but anything else? is there anything? do you want to see what's in here? >> well, let me see what else you got in here. >> jimmy: oh, i don't know. this is just -- >> this is a pretty beat up bag. >> jimmy: because he carries that around with him? >> this is like a homeless person's bag, you know? [ laughter ] oh, look! you know what? >> jimmy: what? >> he left these for you, softballs. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: oh, is that -- no, i didn't -- no, those are
>> jimmy: yeah, that was it. that's what i gave him. >> yeah, you gave him. >> jimmy: yeah, exactly. i'll give them to you later in the interview, yeah. [ laughter ] >> i played softball when i was a lot younger. >> jimmy: you did? >> yeah. >> jimmy: what position were you? >> well, i pitched, and i played outfield. >> jimmy: did you really? >> i was -- yes. i played summer league when i was all the way through high school. >> jimmy: were you good? >> um, you know, by my standards. [ laughter ] i am -- i am -- you know -- >> jimmy: me too. >> not the greatest athlete, but i loved playing sports when i was growing up -- >> jimmy: uh-huh. local businesses would sponsor the teams. >> jimmy: yeah. >> so, we were sponsored by one of the candy distributors in our town, and they were pushing a certain product. >> jimmy: yeah. >> so, we were called "the good & plenty's." [ laughter and applause ] >> jimmy: i guess that's kind of interesting. >> is that candy still around? i'm not even sure. >> jimmy: yeah, absolutely. >> good, yeah. >> jimmy: sure, you can get good & plenty's. >> yeah, well it was great. >> jimmy: but i think they're
[ laughter and applause ] when you were -- it's like liquorish and -- >> yeah, and they were black, white, and pink. >> jimmy: yes, of course, i remember that. >> so, of course, our uniforms were black, white, and pink. >> jimmy: yeah. >> yeah. >> jimmy: i think that's pretty good. >> oh, yeah. yeah, well, you know, it distracted a little bit from the game, but it was worth it. >> jimmy: when you were a a little girl, were you -- did you ever -- did you dream of being president, or was that -- >> no. >> jimmy: you couldn't dream of that? >> no. no, i mean, it wasn't even within the realm of the possible for little girls back then. and, that's what's so exciting about this campaign because we have slowly, but steadily, knocked down all the barriers. [ cheers and applause ] and, look, some people are not happy about the barriers being knocked down. your former guest, donald trump, you know, has refused to actually admit that president obama is an american, born in america, and for five years, he's been hammering in this so-called "birther movement," which i think is so sickening.
because he was born indiana of mexican heritage, called him a a mexican. he went after the gold star family, whose son was heroically lost in iraq because they're muslims. and, i mean, you just have to take a deep breath and say to yourself, "what kind of country do we really want? and i want a country where barriers are knocked down, and little girls and little boys can feel like they can go as far as their hard work will take them without regard to and gender and sexual orientation and all of that." [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: i have two little girls. >> i know you do. >> jimmy: and, i know they're gonna be so psyched that i interviewed you. one day, they're gonna be asking about you, so this is a a historic night for me. it's pretty cool. [ cheers and applause ] >> well, you know, i know you've got two little girls, and, you know i love kids. i started my -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> professional life working
how, not just your kids or my grandkids, but all kids, get everything they need to go as far as their hard work and talent will take them. it's really what we should be focused on in our country. >> jimmy: yeah. well, we have a little -- >> and that's what intend to work on. >> jimmy: we have little boys and girls watching our show. they watch us, and then, they want to see you. why should they grow up to be president? why should they want to be president? >> well, they should want to be what they want to be. they should follow their dreams. but they should not feel that they bump up against a hard glass ceiling, or that because of who they are, where they were born, who their parents are, any other circumstance, that somehow the american dream isn't big enough for them. you know, we have to decide in this election what kind of country we want. you know, are we going to be a a country that comes together, that respects each other, that celebrates our diversity, which, i think, is one of our great strengths -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> or are we gonna be pitted against each other and be divided and have all this bigotry and bullying that's going on?
people at the top? and, are we gonna keep the world safe and work with people whose values we share? i think these are consequential questions, but they're also really at the root of who we are as a country and what values we have. >> jimmy: speaking of pitting against each other, the debate is coming. >> yes, yes. it is. >> jimmy: september 26th -- >> right. >> jimmy: we have lester holt moderating. how -- which trump are you gonna get? do you have any idea of what a bit. >> well, look. he's trying to somehow convince people to forget everything he has said and done, you know. and, i don't think that he's gonna get away with that, at least, you know, judge us on who we are, what we've done, what we've stood for. and, maya angelou has this great line, you know. i admired her so much, i was fortunate enough to get to know her. she said, "when someone shows you who he is, believe him the
right? [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: that is good. >> yeah. >> jimmy: she is amazing. >> yeah. >> jimmy: more with hillary clinton when we come back when we come back, everybody. stick around. [ cheers and applause ] ?? daughter: mom, ready to go? mother: i'm looking for my kohl's coupons. why? i set up the kohl's app on your phone. huh? yeah, your coupons are already in your digital wallet. oh, cool.

>> jimmy: welcome back to the "tonight show" everybody! we are here with the democratic presidential nominee, hillary clinton! [ cheers and applause ] thank you so much for coming back. and thank you for talking to me, cause next time i see you, you might be president of the united states. [ cheers and applause ] >> well, from your lips to god's ears right? >> jimmy: i just really appreciate this. uh, nt campaign i fell like it's so tricky. because you have to go and you have to say hi to everybody and be happy, uh, and you do. but also people kind of want to see this hillary. which is the bad-ass hillary. [ laughter ] yeah, and the serious hillary. and so you have to laugh, but you also, people want to see this. they want to see someone whose gonna protect us and be strong and tough, because you have the reputation. >> right, well, and i will too. >> jimmy: and you absolutely, oh trust me, yeah, i don't mess with you. yeah, yeah. >> we'll protect our country and keep it safe and do some good things. set some big goals. >> jimmy: i mean, yeah, but is it a tricky balance to do, where you? >> it's especially tricky for
there is a lot of serious things. the other night i was on a show and being asked about isis and iran, and i was serious. these are important issues that the country needs to talk about. and the republican's were saying, "oh, she looks so serious." well, you don't talk about isis with a big grin on your face. they're a barbaric evil group that we have to defeat and wipe out. but it is a constant balancing act, you know, how do yoki of keep the energy and the positive spirit while taking seriously what you need to. >> jimmy: cause this campaign, i've never seen anything like it. >> i don't think there has been anything like it. >> jimmy: i mean, it's long, and long, and long. >> it's so long. >> jimmy: and you're everywhere, i just don't know. >> i mean, most other countries, i don't know if anybodies here from other countries, but other democracies -- >> jimmy: yeah, we do usually. >> do not take forever to choose their leaders. they're much more focused and the time period is compressed and i just think it drags it out for people.
you've been going out for 18 months or two years, whatever it takes. >> jimmy: yeah, it really is. um, we do a, i know you have a a tumblr, called "letters to hillary." >> yes. >> jimmy: where kids write you letters. >> right. >> jimmy: some are admiring, some funny, some even a little bit critical. >> yes. >> jimmy: uh, we do a bit on our show called "kid letters," and it's kind of the same thing. uh, where kids write to me with advice about how to improve the "tonight show." >> do you listen? >> jimmy: yes. >> good. >> jimmy: for the most part, i dote example here. >> okay. >> jimmy: this one here's from mason, who is age five, so i don't think he or she is awake right now. um, nathan said, "dear jimmy, i'm five. i like your show, you need science on your show. i like ellen's show, she has science. you don't. ellen wins. it's me mason." and i go thank you. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] ellen wins.
>> well, i think that's good advice. >> jimmy: i do have science on the show, mason. watch the show more, yeah. uh, we do have, there's a few kid letters that we got, these are actual letters, from kids submitted to "letters to hillary." >> right. >> jimmy: and i'd like to read a few to you. >> okay, good. i'd like that. >> jimmy: see what you think. uh, this first one says, "here is some friendly advice for you." >> oh, good. >> jimmy: advice number one, post less on instagram. 200 posts in a month, that's a a lot. [ laughter ] >> w t >> jimmy: uh, it's anonymous. their just giving you straight advice, they don't want any. >> okay, good. >> jimmy: advice number two, they said, post more on snapchat. which is very interesting, cause they don't want on instagram, they want more on snapchat. >> okay. >> jimmy: advice number three says, cut your hair now lol. [ light laughter ] best hair style was when you were a senator, and in november 1994. kid. [ laughter ] >> this is a very,
[ laughter ] >> jimmy: how do they know all these facts? >> oh my, gosh. this is what the internet does. i mean, they can look up pictures from 1994. >> jimmy: yeah, i don't think this is the candidate you have to worry about hair, but uh, yeah. >> yeah well, that's one of my constant themes. >> jimmy: yeah, exactly. uh, this one, this is abby, she signed this one. she's nine-years-old. she says, "dear hillary, i am nine-years-old. hi, my name is abby, and i really want to try, i really want you to try your very best to try an become the president of the united states. let trump know that he's tt [ laughter ] "we come from oshkosh, wisconsin", yeah. >> go haley! i like that a lot. >> jimmy: yeah, hailey and abby, yeah. >> good. >> jimmy: this last one, is from brijani ellis, age 12. uh, she said, "dear hillary clinton, my name is brijani ellis. i would love for you to become president. but there was a wall called donald trump trying to stop you. but no, us women will not stand for it.
that women have a place in this world." [ cheers and applause ] >> yay, brijani! >> jimmy: she's really, brijani ellis. it says, "p.s. i'm 12 and i approve this message." [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] that's cute. uh, well thank you so much for visiting us, best of luck. >> thank you. >> jimmy: please come back and see us thank you very, very much. >> i would like that. thank you very much. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: hillary clinton! the first presidential debate is september 26th. terry crews joins us after the stick around everybody. [ cheers and applause ] ??
